In the aftermath of World War I, the Weimar Republic (in present-day Germany) was shaken by hyperinflation brought on by enormous reparations and by revolutionary unrest. From cabarets and dance halls to private bedrooms, people sought escape from the turmoil by dancing, drinking, and plunging into nightlife. This book presents a trove of previously unpublished photographs that capture the fleeting atmosphere of these parties—moments of glamour shadowed by an undercurrent of anxiety about the future.
