In the late 1970s, as the Cultural Revolution came to an end, academic research resumed across China, triggering a wave of renewed inquiry into what had previously been dismissed as “superstition.” Among the most sensational topics was the yérén, or “wild man.” This photobook gathers local eyewitness accounts, newspaper clippings, scientific field investigations, and other documentary materials from the nationwide wild man craze, re-presenting the feverish excitement and confusion of the moment. Through these images, one can visually relive the unique atmosphere of the era—an uneasy mixture of hope and anxiety, where science and folk belief collided within a society in transition.
