In the early 20th century, Cambridge University was a popular climbing spot. Late at night, after everyone else had gone to sleep, students would gather at the university and enjoy scaling the campus's historic buildings as they pleased. Noel Howard Symington's photographs of students and police are full of street style and humor. This photo book, originally published in 1937, has been reissued by French photographer Thomas Mailänder more than 80 years later.
In the early 20th century, Cambridge University served—surprisingly—as a popular climbing spot. After nightfall, while the town slept, students gathered to scale the university's historic buildings purely for the thrill of it. The scenes recorded by Noël Howard Symington capture students (and the police who chased them) with a mix of streetwise energy and humor. First published in 1937, this photobook has been reissued more than eight decades later by French photographer Thomas Mailaender.
